Tax
and National Insurance Contributions Thresholds increase
The
thresholds for
Tax and NIC
have increased since 6 April 2009. Additionally, new
rates for Statutory
Sick and Maternity
Pay
have been implemented from the same dates.
Annual
General Meeting held on
2 Dec 2008
CIL
Belfast's AGM was held at NICVA. The day was a great

Minimum
Wage Increased from
1 October 2008
The National Minimum
Wage was raised on 1 October 2008.
Workers who are
aged 22 or older are now entitled to £5.73 per
hour.
If you have employees
who are aged 18 to 21, you must offer a rate at least
£4.77. You
should pay the same rate to staff aged 22 years and
above, who are just starting work for you and doing
accredited training.
The minimum rate
payable to 16 and 17 year olds who are above the compulsory
school leaving age is now £3.53 per hour.
If you offer your
Personal Assistant accommodation the offset to the minimum
wage is now £4.46 per day (£31.22 per week).
Fish
Insurance - New Independent Living Policy
Fish
Insurance has recently amended the structure of
its new Independent Living Policy.
From 1 September
2008, cover can now be provided for up to four people
receiving support, provided that they are related or
live-in partners.
Tax
Threshold increased
on
6
September 2008
The Primary Tax Threshold has
been increased from £5435 per year to £6030
per year. This means that employees with a tax code
543L will be changed to 603L.
The Inland Revenue
will issue new P12 cards to Direct Payments users operating
the Simplified Deduction Scheme.
If you receive a new P12 card, use it for payments
to employees after 6 September 2008. You should retain
your present P12 and send both cards to the Inland Revenue
at the end of the current tax year.

CIL
Payroll Service
Would you like
to use Direct Payments or Independent Living Fund but
are daunted by the prospect of dealing with the paperwork?
If so, don't worry, help is at hand....!
CIL offers a payroll
service. All you have to do is register with us and
we will calculate the wages and taxes for your staff
and prepare records for the Inland Revenue. The cost
of the payroll service can be included in your Direct
Payments or ILF
award.

The Department
of Health and Social Services and Public Safety has
produced Guidance to help people considering Direct
Payments.

Centre for Independent
Living - Belfast is a membership organisation, run by
and for disabled people. CIL
- Belfast is very keen to encourage disabled people
to join us as members. As a member, you will be able
to contribute to the work of CIL and have a say in its
